About the Show
After losing both her job and her boyfriend (comes with the territory when you're dating your boss), an unmoored Mae returns to her small Washington hometown to take care of her ailing father. When she unexpectedly meets a mysterious stranger, she has the startling realization that maybe the intimacy she has been craving is easier with the unknown than with her own family. Blending reality and fantasy, Clare Barron's Obie Award-winning play is a tender and darkly comic exploration of family, illness, and cowboys, and how to remain standing when everything you know comes crashing down around you.
This production at the newly reopened Cherry Lane Theatre (now operated by A24) reunites Barron, a Pulitzer Prize finalist, with Obie Award winner and Tony Award nominee Anne Kauffman, who directed the play's 2014 premiere. Alia Shawkat (Search Party, Arrested Development) makes her theatrical debut as Mae, alongside Tony Award nominee Peter Friedman (Job) as Dad. Named a New York Times Critic's Pick, the production has extended multiple times due to audience demand. Time Out praised Barron for pressing "on tender bruises in ways that often leave you laughing with a strange pleasure of recognition."
